KATREBOVÁ BLEHOVÁ, Beáta. František Šubík (Andrej Žarnov) ensnared by the Czechoslovak State Security
František Šubík's (Andrej Žarnov) first attempt to go into exile in April 1945 as part of the evacuation failed. He was forcibly repatriated four months later, deported first to Prague, then to the prison of the Regional Court in Bratislava, where he remained until the end of December 1947. After his release from prison, he found himself in the crosshairs of communist State Security. At the end of January 1951, under the influence of increasing pressure, he was registered in the StB files as a secret collaborator code-named "CASTLE". Being forced to cooperate had a negative impact on the staunch anti-communist Šubík and contributed to his final decision to go into exile. In addition to his professional duties, literary and cultural activities in exile, he also worked for the Slovak political exile. He was mainly involved in the Slovak National Council abroad. He became the chairman of the Slovak Writers Society abroad in 1956 and remained so until he died in 1982. His exile activities did not escape Czechoslovak intelligence attention, which contacted him through the New York station in 1956. The reason for the meetings was an effort to renew cooperation. Intelligence activities were unsuccessful, as Šubík did not agree to any form of cooperation. It was the only documentable attempt of the Czechoslovak intelligence to get Šubík to cooperate, which later did not repeat.
