HALČÍN, Daniel. Vojtech Makovinský – deputy head of StB Directorate of Bratislava

The article deals with Vojtech Makovinský, who in the years 1969 to 1984, was the second-highest-ranking member of the StB within the StB Directorate of the Western Slovak Region. Makovský joined the StB in 1952. Until 1963 he worked in the economic counter-intelligence of the StB in the Banská Bystrica Region. The task of this unit was to protect state secrets, prevent sabotage and other forms of damage to the Czechoslovak economy. The activities of economic counter-intelligence were politically oriented and, in addition to focusing on real criminal activities, they also punished political or class enemies from the employees of state-owned enterprises. Later, Makovinský worked as a head of StB in the Považská Bystrica District and as head of the Vth unit of The Central StB Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Socialist Republic. He reached the peak of his career in October 1969, by being appointed the deputy head of StB Directorate of Bratislava and at the same time head of its counter-intelligence department. He replaced Ján Sútor, who was released from the National Security Corps' services for a protest letter against the Warsaw Pact invasion. Makovinský participated in the management of the entire counterintelligence and repressive activities of the StB Directorate of the Western Slovak Region during that period. After leaving these positions in January 1985, he worked until the end of 1987 in the Czechoslovak intelligence in the District Unit of StB Directorate of Bratislava.
