GAREK, Martin. Revolt in Borský Svätý Mikuláš in the context of the state Catholic action in the Záhorie region

The churches represented the main internal ideological enemy of the communist regime. The most complicated relations were between the Catholic Church and the state power, and in Slovakia this was even more evident than in Czech lands. Initially, the interest was to avoid a confrontation from both sides, but over time the state power escalated its interventions against the Catholic Church, which eventually resulted in Catholic Action. The reaction was a series of commotions, some classified as revolts. Resistance was most pronounced in the northern regions of Slovakia, traditionally under the strongest influence of the Catholic Church, but other areas of Slovakia were not far behind. In the Záhorie region, the most serious incident took place on 8 July 1949 in Borský Svätý Mikuláš. The believers, fearing the arrest of the priest, gathered in front of the municipal office and the National Security Corps station and violence broke out. As a result, 28 believers from the parish were indicted. The case of the defendant Hedviga Rozborová ended tragically as she died in custody. Revolts also took place in other parishes in the Záhorie region.
