GABČO, Martin: “Down with Communism!” Anti-Communist Activities of František Bobek in Eastern Slovakia in the Years 1952–1955

Despite the constant threat of repression, certain individuals took the initiative to organise anti-communist resistance within their local communities. The earliest of these courageous actors were often not members of the former political or social elite, but rather ordinary citizens drawn from diverse social and professional backgrounds. Through their personal initiative, a variety of resistance activities emerged: the distribution of leaflets and prohibited literature, the provision of aid to the persecuted, and the establishment of clandestine groups.

The formation of such figures was typically a gradual and complex process, shaped by their refusal to remain passive in the face of the consolidation of an undemocratic communist regime. Their stance and actions served as an inspiration to others, encouraging further efforts to challenge totalitarian oppression. While their activities were a direct response to politically motivated persecution, these individuals themselves soon became victims of the wider apparatus of repression.

The study presents the profile of the regional protagonist from Stropkov – František Bobek.
