BEŇUŠ, Patrik. Industry in the period of the 1st Slovak Republic (1939–1945) on the example of the Hnúšťa district

The paper analyses primary and secondary historical sources, from which it interprets the acquired knowledge in the range of selected industrial enterprises relevant to the district of Hnúšťa during 1939–1945. The paper then compares the district industries with the national economic situation in the 1st Slovak Republic. The paper is divided into two parts. The first part is very general and focuses on the situation in the industry in the 1st Slovak Republic. The second part highlights the industrial situation with a special focus on the Hnúšťa district during the years 1939–1945 and analyses the situation after the Vienna Arbitration. The situation in the industry was directly influenced by the close economic ties with Germany, which was mainly related to mutual economic agreements and the integration of Slovakia into the German economic area. This also affected the industry in the Hnúšťa district, which correlated with the industrial situation on a national scale. Both the republic and the district experienced an upswing in industrial production and its downfall as well, which began after the defeats of the German army in Stalingrad and Kursk and after the fall of the Mussolini regime in Italy. The declining situation in the industry was completed by the evacuation of German troops and the transit of the front lines through the territory of Slovakia.
